Yana Rafael was born in Ukraine in 1975. She studied at the High School of the Arts and went on to graduate as a teacher of art from the State Art College in Kharkiv. She emigrated to Israel in 2003, where she was well known for her artwork under her maiden name Yana Ranevskaya.
In 2013 she married and emigrated to the United States, from that point forward she painted under her married name Yana Rafael. Her style is Impasto, full of thick brushstrokes in vibrant colors. She uses real life subject matter and emphasizes the architecture of buildings, but often paints with unexpected colors.
Vincent van Gogh is a clear influence for her style, and her artwork is paving the way for her as an emerging artist.
